The wildlife and scenery that you can expect will take your breath away with every turn you take, with so many different species, creatures and plant life that you will be amazed! It is an island that still to this very day remains hardly untouched from the outside world and the locals take pride in retaining its natural state and try very hard to keep up the pristine surrounds. The Norfolk Island group is situated on the Norfolk Ridge, an elongated submarine rise which extends from New Zealand to New Caledonia. It is special because it is a place where over 40 different kinds of plants and animals exist that are not found elsewhere. The island is 1610kms east north east of Sydney and is roughly around 8km long and 5km wide. Two smaller uninhabited islands, Nepean and Phillip, lie to the south at a distance of 1km and 6km respectively. Its climate is subtropical. Norfolk Island's National Park has some of the best rainforests remaining in the world. One-third of the island is still devoted to National Parks. There are 178 species of native plants on the island, 40 of these are considered as being unique to the Norfolk Island. The National Park and its amazing flora and fauna can be explored using the walking tracks on foot or bike.One of the most famous attractions that can be found on Norfolk Island are the tall standing Norfolk Pines that fringe the shoreline. These huge captivating trees can reach up to approximately 57 meters and have a girth of around 11meters. They are truly something to be seen while you are here! And with the gentle sea breeze rolling in off the ocean waters you can breath in what scientists say is the cleanest air after the Antarctic. You can visit historical Kingston, the tombstones in Kingston's cemetery, Mt. Bates, Mt. Pitt, Emily Bay and the historical chapel of St. Barnabas and walk through old convicts barracks. There is horse riding and bushwalking along rugged cliff tops and trails where lemons and mandarins grown wild. Explore the island on a 4WD tour and fish in waters off Philip Island where people have been known to catch four fish on one line. Then come night time you can gaze up in to the clear night skies which are a stargazer's delight. Not only can you look forward to wonderful and unique and animals and plants on the island but within the waters that fringe Norfolk Island you can explore wonderful coral reefs that are brimming with all kinds of sea creatures.
